Let’s talk about what to do with all this stress!
You’re feeling overwhelmed, stressed out, your heart is beating at a rate that doesn’t seem healthy, you can’t quiet your restless, worried mind, and all of the dread and all of the to-do’s.
All that worry and stress takes an incredible toll on our bodies and our relationships.
You may find that you’re feeling more irritable, yelling at your partner, all of sudden you hate your best friend, or are mad at your dog.
That’s not really who you want to be because it’s not who you are!
It sucks when we show up in our lives in ways that are misaligned with who we really are.
The Number One Question to ask yourself to start soothing stress and anxiety:
How can I soothe my nervous system?
Your nervous system is a physiological, biological system that helps protect you in times of real need. If there’s ever a threat to your safety or you’re confronted with real danger, your nervous system is going to become activated and come to the rescue to protect you.
It’ll compel you to either fight off the threat or to flee from it. It’ll say, “Get the hell outa here! This is a threat and I have to protect myself!”
There’s also a freeze response that immobilizes your body in the hopes that the threat will overlook you and pass you by.
This system can help protect you when there’s a need for it; when you’re actually in danger.
The problem is that in modern-day life it can feel like you’re up against threat all the time, especially if you live in a city, are under financial stress, or you live in a violent neighborhood.
Your ability to discern when you need your body to protect you from threat and when you don’t can become murky.
I want you to regularly start to ask yourself, How Do I Soothe My Nervous System?!
How do I slow it down? How do I take the beat, pause, breathe, and chill? Your frontal lobes, the part of your brain that is rational, logical and helps you make good decisions, needs to come online. This will allow you to live your life aligned with yours values.
Regulating your nervous system can help you connect to your intentions and respond to life’s stressors with more emotional regulation.
You have to start with the physiology getting soothed, otherwise everything else in your life will suffer.
You can do that by taking a few slow deep breaths.
I highly recommend considering a meditation practice, connect to yourself in times of stillness, cultivate mindfulness. You can also light candles, put on some sweet, soft music, take breaks, ground yourself with the senses (essential oils, name and notice your surrounding objectively).
Give yourself enough time for self-care and self-prioritization. Devote the time to relaxing your system. This helps soothe stress and reduce anxiety.
