One of the most common questions I get asked is, “How do I know if it’s my trauma or my intuition?”
It can be hard to know who to trust after trauma.
My recommendation is to start with learning to trust your intuition first (build self-trust). It actually isn’t about whether or not you can trust someone else. The stronger inquiry is, “Can I trust myself to choose someone I can trust?”
If you’re honest with yourself, you’ll know in the past you’ve likely given trust to someone who was unsafe. This is not to shame or blame yourself for these decisions but to understand them better so you stop living them out today.
Childhood relational trauma creates an internalized idea that unsafe people are normal.
Practice getting more comfortable letting your intuition lead your life. You’ll begin to learn not to override your pure knowing of what is and isn’t safe for you. Once you trust your own intuitive sense of safety, space to trust opens. Healing happens when you enter.
Even though it doesn’t always feel simple, it’s a easy formula when we break it down.
Start being radically honest with yourself.
Your intuition knows what feels okay & what doesn’t. Start to listen and respect when something feels off & take according action.
Be kind towards the trauma response.
The trauma imprint may compel you to go towards danger instead of away from it. Underneath this is vulnerability and unmet needs. Foster a kind inner space for full expression of what’s there.
Begin to practice following your intuition.
Notice what feels pure versus what feels mucky. Notice what feels eerily familiar versus what feels refreshingly new.
Your intuition always knows what’s safe. Trauma has disconnected you from this. The medicine is in reconnecting.
Drop into your own system more often. Make it a priority to check-in with yourself all throughout the day. This creates an intention-led life and a stronger sense of direction.
Give your focus to your heart space, take deep breathes, clear your mind often.
